Kupcho in third place after 36 holes in third pro start; Saunders misses cut in U.S. Open

By Gary Baines – 06/14/2019

If Jennifer Kupcho keeps this up, this weekend she’ll have her best finish ever in an LPGA Tour event.

The Westminster resident has shot back-to-back 5-under-par 67s and holds third place after Friday’s action at the Meijer LPGA Classic in Grand Rapids, Mich.

With a 10-under 134 total, Kupcho, playing her third event as a professional, trails leader Brooke Henderson by six strokes and American Brittany Altomare by three.

On Friday, Kupcho made seven birdies and two bogeys for her 67. She went bogey-free — with five birdies — in Thursday’s round.

The 72-hole tournament will continue through Sunday.

Kupcho’s best showing ever in an LPGA Tour event came last year when she was an amateur as she placed 16th in the Marathon Classic.

Elsewhere:

— Former Fort Collins resident Sam Saunders missed the 36-hole cut in his third U.S. Open after shooting a 4-over-par 75 on Friday at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Saunders, who has now made one cut in three U.S. Open appearances, posted a two-day total of 5-over-par 147, which left him three strokes shy of advancing to the final two rounds.

Saunders paid the price for two double bogeys on Friday. He also carded three birdies and three bogeys.

— Former University of Colorado golfer Yannik Paul shares fourth place at the midway point of the Golf BC Championship on PGA Tour Canada.

Paul has gone 69-65 for an 8-under-par 134 total, which leaves him three strokes behind co-leaders Jonathan Garrick and Jake Knapp. Paul used an eagle to shoot a 7-under 29 on the front nine on Friday.

Kyler Dunkle, winner of the 2018 CGA Amateur, shares ninth place at 135 after carding scores of 68-67.
