New partner, similar results.
Last year, Katelyn Lehigh of Loveland teamed with sister Lauren to not only share stroke-play medalist honors at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball, but they advanced to the match-play quarterfinals of the national championship.
This time around, with Lauren having turned pro in the interim, Katelyn Lehigh has teamed up with Fresno State teammate Amelia Garibaldi at the Four-Ball. And while they didn’t earn medalist honors on Sunday at Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club, they came darn close. Specifically, they finished tied for third out of 64 teams in the field in the stroke-play portion of the event, ending up a shot behind the two team co-medalists.
Lehigh, a two-time Class 5A girls state high school individual champion, and Garibaldi shot back-to-back rounds of 3-under-par 68 to end up at 6-under 136. Through two rounds, they had nine-better-ball birdies and three bogeys.
Lehigh — with sister Lauren caddying for her in the stroke-play portion of the event — and Garibaldi will be among the 32 teams advancing to match play, which begins on Monday. With Lauren departing after day 2 to compete in a WAPT event in Tulsa, dad Mitch will take over Katelyn’s bag on Monday.
Lehigh and Garibaldi aren’t the only team with significant Colorado ties to move on.
Also advancing were Kaitlin Zingler of Lakewood and Ashleigh Wilson of Highlands Ranch. Zingler, a University of Denver golfer, and Wilson, a member of the Team Colorado elite junior squad, went 70-71 for a 1-under-par 141 total, which tied them for 18th place in stroke play. They made five birdies through two days.
The Women’s Four-Ball will continues through Wednesday, when both the semifinals and finals are scheduled.
