Where Couples Can Win Together
Couples in Colorado can play golf together at any public course, at any time when the men’s club, the women’s club or another group hasn’t taken over the tee sheet. But sometimes it’s fun to feel like a team, competing against other teams, and then enjoy a 19th hole with other teams of couples.
At private clubs, Sunday often informally turns into Couples Day, and many clubs have a year-end Couples Championship with a glitzy trophy. But even at public courses, CGA members can find several options for couples leagues, where “couple” may or may not be loosely defined. More strictly defined “mixed doubles” leagues offer another experience, where the couple need not have any legal or romantic relationship together but must be male and female.
Check with your local course or recreation district to find options like the samples here, but, be prepared: Couples golf is so popular that leagues fill up early.
CommonGround Golf Course Mixed Doubles: There’s social couples golf, and then there is CommonGround’s Mixed Doubles Golf League, which offers a more competitive spin and the possibility of a trip to the nationals. Every other Friday May through August, at either 3:30 or 5 p.m., male-female teams play nine holes in a scramble format, both playing each shot and then using the best of the two shots for the next turn until the ball is holed. No handicap is required – but, marking the 2026 calendar is definitely a prerequisite because registration opened in March and the field already is full for 2025.
Aurora Couples League: This popular, weekly Friday afternoon gathering offers couples a signup choice of “Competitive Division” or “Casual Division.” In-season rounds May through September at Meadow Hills, Aurora Hills and Springhill are played in a variety of formats, including Scramble, Shamble, Chapman and Stableford, and couples have the option of extending the usual nine-hole round to 18. A club championship is included in the $110 registration fee.
Chipeta Couples Golf: Grand Junction’s executive course (par 59) makes Friday night date night for local couples every week from May through August, with each nine-hole tournament followed by dinner. All skill levels are welcome and the list of fun games include 3-clubs-plus-putter. Beware the occasional alternate-shot format, which, even the best of friends have found, can drive a wedge into an otherwise congenial relationship when she finds he’s put her behind a tree or he watches her shot splash into a bunker.
Westminster Couples League: This Sunday nine-hole league at Legacy Ridge has an August kickoff and goes every other week through September, which is perfect for golfing pairs content to wait until the leaves turn to commit Sundays to watching the Broncos. Course assistant pro James Graczyk promises a mix of formats and space for 24 couples, with signups likely in early July, so there’s still time to get on his email list.
Spark Golf Leagues: This huge network of 9-hole social golf leagues is gaining steam in Colorado and beyond, now boasting more than 2,000 courses in North America. Bring your partner and compete as both a team and individuals, following relaxed, fun rules. For instance, putts inside 3 feet are good! Lies can be improved anywhere in the fairway! It’s not golf as most CGA members know it, but serves as a great intro for newbies and some courses have post-round gatherings. Search the website for nearby venues.
