DU’s McCoy posts second major tourney top-10 finish of his freshman season

By Gary Baines – 03/26/2019

Two weeks after one University of Denver freshman went to Oregon to record an individual top-10 finish, another did likewise on Tuesday.

Cal McCoy (pictured) from Highlands Ranch, part of the first Colorado squad to win a boys Junior America’s Cup team title, notched the second large-field top-10 of his young career at DU.

McCoy carded rounds of 73-71-73 for a 1-over-par 217, which left him tied for eighth in the Oregon Duck Invitational in Creswell, Ore. He ended up six strokes behind champion Ryan Gronlund of Oregon. He made four birdies, three bogeys and a final-hole double bogey on Tuesday.

McCoy’s previous top-10 in a large-field college tournament was a fourth-place showing in the season-opening Ram Masters Invitational in September.

DU placed 10th as a team in the 16-school Oregon Duck Invite field.

On March 12, DU redshirt freshman Esteban Missura placed a career-best third in the Bandon Dunes Championship.
