DU’s Logan Hale, a 2-time state high school champ, finishes college-career-best third: also notching top-10s: UNC’s Jaci Hartman and Timbre Shehee

It’s not unusual for golfers who have played the great majority of their tournaments in one area of the country to sometimes struggle when competing elsewhere. Different grasses and elevation and humidity can be hurdles to overcome, along with simply traveling rather than playing at home.
It appears as if Coloradan Logan Hale has done a better job than many in avoiding falling victim to the pitfalls.
The University of Denver sophomore, a graduate of Erie High School, on Tuesday posted the best individual finish of her college career. And she did it far from Colorado, tying for third out of 63 players at the More Than Golf Invitational at Old Barnwell Golf Club in Aiken, S.C., which is less than 40 miles east of Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters.
That marks the fifth top-10 college finish in less than two seasons for Hale, who won two girls 4A state high school individual titles. Two of those top-10s have come in Colorado — in Highlands Ranch and Wolcott — but there’s also one near the East Coast (South Carolina), one in the Great Lakes region (Wisconsin) and one in the Desert Southwest (Mesa, Ariz.).
That’s the epitome of spanning the country.
At this week’s More than Golf Invite, Hale went 74-74-72 and finished at 1 over par, two strokes behind champion Yu Zeng of Columbia (71-78-69). In Tuesday’s final round, Hale eagled the 285-yard, par-4 14th hole and added a birdie and two bogeys.
As a team, DU placed fourth out of 12 schools in South Carolina, ending up 18 strokes behind winner Columbia.

— Elsewhere: Another golfer who grew up in Colorado and now plays college golf in the state, University of Northern Colorado senior Timbre Shehee, also recorded a top-10 finish on Tuesday — at a different tournament.
The Mead High School graduate tied for sixth out of 88 golfers at the West Texas Classic in Abilene, joining UNC sophomore teammate Jaci Hartman (fourth place) in the top 10.
In Shehee’s case, it was her fifth top-7 finish in seven tournaments so far this season. She has two second places, two sixths and a seventh. This week in Texas, she carded scores of 68-72-75 to check in at 5 over par, four behind champion Macie Elzinga of Bowling Green.
As for Hartman, she went 70-70-74 to finish at 4 over par. The fourth place was her college career best — and second straight top 10.
UNC ended up third in the 16-school field, 11 back of champion Abilene Christian.
