Ash Edwards of Boulder goes 8 under par on first 7 holes of back 9 en route to 64 and 7-stroke win in Colorado Junior PGA; Sophia Lee claims girls title

By Gary Baines – 7/9/2025

One of the most-talked-about feats in Colorado junior golf in the 21st century took place at Pelican Lakes in Windsor.

Wyndham Clark, who has since gone on to win a U.S. Open and three PGA Tour titles in all, wrapped up his high school golf career at Valor Christian by shooting back-to-back rounds of 64 at Pelican Lakes in the 2011 4A boys state high school tournament to claim the individual title (his second) by eight strokes.

We bring this up because on Wednesday another remarkable round of 64 was shot at Pelican Lakes by a Colorado junior golfer en route to a runaway victory.

Ash Edwards of Boulder, son of University of Colorado men’s golf head coach Roy Edwards, fired an 8-under-par 64 to win the boys division of a junior major — the Mizuno Colorado Junior PGA Championship — by seven strokes.

And just as remarkable as Edwards’ score was how he did it. The 16-year-old from Boulder Country Club, who plays his high school golf at Fairview, went 8 under par in seven holes — Nos. 10-16, including making an eagle on the par-4 14th. It was one of two eagles for the round from Edwards, who also did the trick on the par-5 fifth hole.

In fact, Edwards was 10 under par for the day going into No. 18, but a double bogey there led to his “settling” for a 64, one shot off his personal tournament best.

It marked Edwards’ second junior major title in Colorado as he won the Colorado PGA Junior Match Play last year.

Edwards’ score on Wednesday marked the second big-time tournament round of 64 shot by a Colorado junior golfer in northern Colorado in less than a week. On Saturday, 17-year-old Brayden Forte of Aurora was 9 under par through 15 holes en route to an 8-under-par 64 at TPC Colorado. That score earned him a spot in The Ascendant presented by Blue, a Korn Ferry event that starts on Thursday at that same TPC Colorado course in Berthoud.

Perhaps not coincidentally, Edwards and Forte will represent the CGA at the Junior America’s Cup in Portland, Ore., July 29-31, where they’ll be joined on the Colorado team by Tyler Long of Evergreen and Miles Kuhl of Boulder.

Kuhl, a Fairview teammate of Edwards’, and Dalton Sisneros of Aurora tied for second on Wednesday with a 5-under-par total at Pelican Lakes.

In the girls division of the Colorado Junior PGA, Sophia Lee of Columbine Valley, the 2A girls state high school champion this year, prevailed by two strokes. The 15-year old finished at 9 over par after rounds of 80-71-74. She won by two over Addison Dorsey of Colorado Springs and Maddie Makino of Parker.

Lee is a member of Team Colorado, a junior elite squad that’s part of the U.S. National Development Program.
