Colorado resident Scott Vincent qualifies for his first U.S. Open; Coloradan Chris DiMarco posts first top-5 finish in a senior major, tying for fifth in Regions Tradition

By Gary Baines – 5/19/2025

Sunday night/Monday morning yielded some “major” results for several Colorado-based tour golfers:

— Scott Vincent, a Zimbabwe native who now resides in Colorado, qualified for his first U.S. Open — and second major championship — by tying for medalist honors on Monday in final qualifying in Shiga Prefecture, Japan.

With the top three finishers out of a field of 43 earning berths into the U.S. Open — set for June 12-15 in Oakmont, Pa. — Vincent posted consecutive rounds of 5-under-par 67 to tie Japan’s Yuta Sugiura for the top spot. Over 36 holes, the former LIV golfer made an eagle, 11 birdies and three birdies.

Vincent got a little redemption after losing in a playoff for the final available U.S. Open berth in last year’s qualifying in Japan.

Vincent’s lone major championship appearance to date came at the 2022 British Open, where he missed the cut. Vincent tied for 16th in the 2021 Olympics, representing Zimbabwe. This year, he’s competed primarily in Asia, where in the past he’s recorded three victories on the Japan Golf Tour and one on the Asian Tour.

Chris DiMarco, who has lived in the Denver area since 2018, finished tied for fifth at the Regions Tradition, which concluded on Monday in Birmingham, Ala., after enduring weather delays. That marks the best showing ever in a senior major for a guy who was famously runner-up in a playoff at the 2005 Masters, and also was second in the 2006 British Open.

In fact, DiMarco’s only better showing in his PGA Tour Champions career — which includes 142 starts — was a fourth place at the 2020 Ally Challenge.

The 56-year-old winner of three PGA Tour events posted rounds of 70-65-69-69 at the Regions Tradition for a 15-under-par total, which left him five strokes behind champion Angel Cabrera, winner of a Masters and a U.S. Open. Over the four rounds, DiMarco carded two eagles (both on Saturday), 22 birdies, nine bogeys and a double bogey.

In fact, DiMarco was one of three Colorado residents who finished in the top 20 on Monday, as David Duval placed 12th (12 under par) and Shane Bertsch 16th (11 under).

Another senior major awaits this week as the Senior PGA Championship starts Thursday in Bethesda, Md. DiMarco placed sixth in that event in 2024.
