Back-To-Back for Coloradans

Jon Lindstrom of Denver wins by 3 at Golfweek Senior Division National Championship, becoming the 2nd straight Coloradan to prevail at the event

By Gary Baines – 4/4/2024

Coloradans are doing their best to corner the market when it comes to the Golfweek Senior Division National Championship.

Last year, Gary Albrecht, president of the CGA’s volunteer board of directors, claimed the title in the prestigious event.

And this week, another Coloradan, Jon Lindstrom of Denver, earned the trophy at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, Calif., a year after placing third in the tournament.

Lindstrom, who swept the CGA’s two senior major titles last year en route to being named the 2023 CGA Senior Player of the Year, posted rounds of 71-70-67 for an 8-under-par 208 total, which was good for a three-stroke victory. Thanks to stellar tee-to-green play, he carded six birdies and one bogey in Wednesday’s final round of the 83-player event, which is limited to golfers 55 and older.

“I had been hitting it good the whole week (but) just haven’t been making a lot of putts,” Lindstrom told Golfweek. “I hit it closer (Wednesday) than the previous two days and I was making putts, so it was a good combination.”

Lindstrom finished the week with 12 birdies and four bogeys.

The 56-year-old is ranked seventh in the world among male amateur golfers age 55 and older. He won another big-time senior major title last year when he prevailed at the Trans-Mss Senior Championship. Also last year, he placed ninth in the British Senior Amateur.

“Although I had two or three wins (in 2023), I had a number of top 5s, which is always satisfying (and) which means I’m always competing,” the golfer from Lakewood Country Club said. “It was just a matter of having a day like (Wednesday) where I could move up significantly.”

Besides his 2023 victories in the CGA Senior Match Play and Senior Amateur, Lindstrom has three CGA Mid-Amateur titles to his credit. And four times — out of the four occasions in which he’s competed in the Inspirato Colorado Senior Open — he’s been the low amateur in the event.

Meanwhile, in his title defense at the Golfweek Senior Division National Championship, Albrecht finished 55th this week (78-74-80).
