CGA Mashie Championship

RiverDale Knolls & ThornCreek Golf Course

Format: 4- Ball Matchplay – Each team is guaranteed two days of golf. Partners play their best ball against the better ball of the other team. Each flight has a consolation bracket for teams losing in the first round matches. All teams will play each course the first two days, with final matches for the day two winners being played at Riverdale Knolls GC on day three. Only winning teams from day two move onto day three. Teams forfeiting their first match will not be eligible to compete in consolation round matches. Matches that are tied after 18 holes will be extended to determine a winner. Teams are flighted according to the team combined handicap index with approximately eight teams per flight.

Mashie Champions of Champion Flight: Kristine Franklin & Janet Moore

Final Day

Our 2024 CGA Mashie Champions of the Championship Flight are Janet Moore & Kristine Franklin winning 1 up in a close match against Lisa Arndt & Kathleen Johnson. It was an exciting day for Janet winning her 12th Mashie & 26th CGA/CWGA title with her University of Arizona college teammate, Kris, winning her 1st! They were in the graduating classes of ‘87 and ‘89.

Runners up Kathleen & Lisa

Janet and Kristine have played in events together since they were kids. Janet said the girls played in the state 9-hole event every year and the last time she ever beat Kris was when she was 12. They said that although they always play in events against each other, they never feel like they are playing against each other because Kris is always giving Janet helpful pointers. The partners had a nicer day to play at Thorncreek yesterday than the first day of cold and windy weather on day 1 here at Riverdale. They didn’t feel good the first day, but powered through. They came back yesterday and today ham-and-egging it to the finish. They wanted to give kudos to the courses for being in prime playing conditions, “Especially this course at Riverdale; the fairways are like carpet and the greens like glass. It is very impressive with how many rounds that go through here, they have done a great job,” the women expressed. Janet said, “Kris played phenomenal all week. She carried me, I mean, carried me the first two days,” and Kris followed up with, “She’s too kind. Janet really stepped up today because when I was out of the hole, you know, chipping up to the green for par, Janet was there for me to lean on. Finally after nine holes, we both were playing better and put pressure on our opponents.”

“We had the three best groups to play against this week. It was really good competition, kind people, and so professional. With Lisa and Kathleen, they played hard and well. I felt bad because they had us in the perfect position. It was a good match and really fun. No one gave it away. Then yesterday we had a great match as well against Stacey & D’Ann. We got to watch Stacey get a hole-in-one at Thorncreek and we had been talking about someone making one since the first day! That was really exciting to watch. And the first day was with Bev and Nancy and they were so fun. The win today was the icing on the cake. It was a real treat of a week.” says Janet and Kris.

Going into the 18th hole Janet & Kris were 1 up. All they had to do was tie the hole. Janet had an 18-foot putt for par and just barely missed it, but showed Kris the way. Kris was able to read the line of her 25-foot par putt that she sank to tie the hole and win the match!

Although the 2024 Mashie has come to an end, all of the women are walking away with a week full of fun memories. All of the women have said this is their favorite tournament to play in because they get to play with a partner and not have to worry about their score. That is the plus side to match play. They get to play hole by hole and forget all the mistakes.
