Coloradan Hurter opens with 70 in national Senior PGA Professional Championship

By Gary Baines - 10/03/2019

Don Hurter of Sedalia, who finished third in the Colorado Senior PGA Professional Championship in August, leads the Centennial State’s contingent after Thursday’s first round of the national Senior PGA Professional Championship in Austin, Texas.

Hurter, a longtime instructor at Castle Pines Golf Club, shot an even-par 70, which leaves him tied for 57th place out of 264 players with three rounds remaining. Hurter (pictured) made four birdies and four bogeys, with two of the latter coming on his final four holes, and trails leader Frank Bensel Jr., of Jupiter, Fla., by seven strokes, relative to par.

Three Coloradans sit at 3 over par after round 1 — Doug Rohrbaugh of Carbondale, Sherry Andonian-Smith of Centennial and Doug Montgomery of Westminster.

The field will be cut to the low 90 players and ties after two rounds, and to the low 70 and ties after three rounds.

In addition to the title being on the line this week, 35 players will earn berths into the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, which will be held in May in Benton Harbor, Mich.

Here are the scores for all the Coloradans competing this week:
