Coloradan Hurter moves into top 50 at national Senior PGA Professional Championship despite triple bogey
By Gary Baines - 10/05/2019
For a 1-under-par score of 71, Saturday’s round was certainly a roller-coaster ride for Sedalia’s Don Hurter at the national Senior PGA Professional Championship in Austin, Texas.
On the positive side, the instructor at Castle Pines Golf Club eagled the par-5 eighth hole at Barton Creek’s Fazio Foothills Course, and added four birdies, including one on the 18th hole. And he needed just 24 official putts for the round and one-putted a dozen times.
On the negative side of the ledger, there was a triple-bogey 7 on the 16th hole to go along with two bogeys.
The bottom line is that Saturday’s 71 helped Hurter (pictured) make the 54-hole cut to the low 70 players and ties, as he sits in 49th place at even-par 214. And though the triple bogey certainly didn’t help the cause, Hurter is still very much in the running for a top-35 finish, which would land him a spot in the 2020 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, which will be held in May in Benton Harbor, Mich. Going into Sunday, the players tied for 34th place sat at 212.
Leading the tournament, which started with a 264-person field, is Frank Bensel Jr., of Jupiter, Fla., who checked in at 132.
