Aspen's Pevny posts another top-5 finish in Optimist International Junior Championship

By Gary Baines -07/26/2019

There's something about the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship that brings out the best in Aspen's Nic Pevny.

A year ago, the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado member won the boys 12-13 division of the tournament.  And this week, as the second phase of the Optimist was completed at Trump National Doral in Miami, Pevny tied for fifth place out of 134 players in the boys 14-15 division.

Pevny shot rounds of 79-76-70 for a 10-over-par 225 total for three rounds, which left him four strokes behind champion Nashawn Tyson.

The top Colorado finisher in the other division that competed this week, the girls 13-14, was Abigail Aeschleman of Highlands Ranch, who was 17th out of 57 players. Aeschleman went 79-79-82 for a 24-over-par total of 240.

In accompanying competitions, Gage Messingham of Arvada won both the long drive championship and teamed with Jason to claim the parent-child title.

Messingham hit a 298-yard drive into a stiff headwind to claim the long-drive championship for his division.
