By Gary Baines - 7/23/2021
In a Pacific Coast Amateur in which the scores of the participating Coloradans went up and down like a yo-yo day to day, Josh McLaughlin of Loveland posted the top finish of the golfers from the Centennial State.
McLaughlin, the 2019 CGA Match Play champion, closed with a 1-under-par 70 Friday at Chambers Bay, site of the 2015 U.S. Open, to check in in 66th place out of the 83-man field. McLaughlin, who made two birdies and one bogey in round 4, went 75-72-78-70 for an 11-over-par 295 total.
Nick Nosewicz of Aurora, the 2015 CGA Match Play winner, and 2019 CGA Mid-Amateur champ Ryan Axlund of Englewood tied for 70th place at 297. Nosewicz carded scores of 78-74-70-75, while Axlund went 71-75-69-82 in University Place, Wash.
Meanwhile, University of Denver golfer John Sand, who came into the final day tied for eighth place, shot a 77 on Friday to end up at 283 and in 23rd place.
On Wednesday, the three Colorado residents placed 13th while representing the CGA in the Pacific Coast Amateur’s 36-hole Morse Cup competition. (READ MORE)
