Loveland’s Katelyn Lehigh and her college teammate ousted in round of 16 at U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball; Coloradan has made match play at the event for the last 3 years
By Gary Baines
The sweet 16 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball turned out a little sour on Tuesday for Coloradan Katelyn Lehigh.
The two-time girls state high school individual champion from Loveland had advanced to day 4 of the national championship for the second time in three years. But she and partner Amelia Garibaldi of Stockton, Calif., a college teammate at Fresno State, couldn’t muster any magic on Tuesday in the round of 16 and lost 3 and 2 to 22nd-seeded Lucy Cook and Eliza Yelverton, two players from West Point, Miss.
That means that in the last three years in this event, Lehigh has made it to the quarterfinals (with older sister Lauren), the round of 32 (with Garibaldi) and the round of 16 (with Garibaldi again
Lehigh and Garibaldi, seeded sixth, never led in Tuesday’s match. And Cook and Yelverton pulled away in the middle of the round by winning three holes in a stretch of four, making an eagle and two birdies in the process, to go 4 up through 12. The Fresno State teammates won 13 with a par, but the teams tied the final three holes with pars.
Lehigh just wrapped up her senior season with the Bulldogs.
