Making Progress

Denver native Mark Hubbard posts his best PGA Tour finish since November — and first top-5 in that span

By Gary Baines – 5/4/2025

Mark Hubbard was no match for world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler this week at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson on the PGA Tour — but everyone else in the field could say the same thing at the event in McKinney, Texas.

But it was still a big step in the right direction for the Denver native.

Hubbard tied for fifth on Sunday at the CJ Cup, marking his best showing on the PGA Tour since November. The Colorado Academy grad had missed seven cuts in his previous nine tournaments, though he placed an encouraging 12th in his previous individual start, at the Corales Puntacana Championship two weeks ago.

Hubbard shot four rounds in the 60s — 69-65-68-65 — for a 17-under-par total. That left him 14 strokes behind the juggernaut that was Scheffler (61-63-66-63), but Hubbard was a much more reasonable six strokes out of second place and three out of third.

The performance was worth $305,972 for Hubbard, who recorded the eighth top-5 finish of his PGA Tour career.
