Coloradans Condon, Sullivan start strong at U.S. Senior Amateur

Two golfers from the western half of Colorado are in the top 15 after Saturday's opening round of stroke play at the U.S. Senior Amateur in Durham, N.C.
Greg Condon of Monte Vista, a co-medalist in last year's U.S. Senior Am, shot a 2-under-par 70 at Old Chatman Golf Club, good for a share of second place, two strokes behind leader Dean Channell of Cary, N.C., who chalked up six birdies on Saturday.
Condon (pictured in a USGA file photo), who fell in the round of 32 of match play last year, made four birdies and two bogeys in round 1.
Meanwhile, Scott Sullivan of Grand Junction, the Colorado Mesa University men's golf coach who made it to the round of 16 at this event last year, carded a 1-over 73, which left him tied for 15th place. He made two birdies and three bogeys on Saturday.
The top 64 players after Sunday's second stroke-play round will earn berths into match play, which begins on Monday.
Also inside that cut line after Saturday is Victor Minovich of Thornton, who fired a 75 and shares 37th place.
Here are the scores for all the Coloradans in the field at the U.S. Senior Amateur:
2. Greg Condon, Monte Vista 70
15. Scott Sullivan, Grand Junction 73
37. Victor Minovich, Thornton 75
97. Owen Ellis, Boulder 79
