Coloradan Kirsty Hodgkins-Redner survives playoff to make match play, then takes down a stroke-play co-medalist at U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur; Hannah Wood’s big rally falls just short

By Gary Baines – 10/6/2025

Kirsty Hodgkins-Redner of Lafayette had to arrive at the course very early and still be on the premises in the mid-afternoon on Monday.

But if that bothered the former University of Colorado golfer, she certainly didn’t show it.

Hodgkins-Redner, winner of both the 2020 CGA Women’s Match Play and this year’s CGA Mid-Amateur Stroke Play, successfully negotiated a 12-golfer playoff for the final four spots into match play at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur early Monday morning at Monterey Peninsula Country Club in Pebble Beach, Calif. Going par-birdie in the playoff did the trick.

Then, after a few hours, the native of Australia teed it up in the match play round of 64. And she didn’t miss a beat despite playing against one of the two stroke-play co-medalists, Jessica Spicer of Williamsburg, Va., a former Virginia Tech golfer.

Hodgkins-Redner parred the first 10 holes of the match, building a 3-up lead in the process. Then she won No. 13 with a birdie and 14 with a par to close things out. Hodgkins-Redner finished even-par for 14 holes.

In Tuesday morning’s round of 32, the former Buff will face Shannon Fish-Martin of Montgomery, Texas, a former University of Texas golfer, a former pro, and a former contestant on Golf Channel’s “Big Break”.

Meanwhile, despite a furious late rally on Monday by former Coloradan Hannah Wood, fifth-seeded Erica Whitehouse of Mechanicsville, Va., defeated her, 1 up. In a match in which only five holes were tied, Wood never led.

The 2014 CGA Women’s Stroke Play champion lost five of the first 11 holes to pars and two to birdies, falling 5 down. But shortly thereafter things got interesting, with Wood winning four straight holes (14-17). She prevailed on 14 and 15 with pars and on 16 and 17 with birdies, cutting her deficit to 1 down. But Whitehouse ended things on 18 as the two players tied the hole with pars.

Whitehouse, a former Charleston Southern golfer, finished 6 over par, while Wood was 8 over. But Wood played her final 10 holes in 1 under.

The U.S. Women’s Mid-Am is limited to competitors 25 and older.
