Young and Talented

2 freshmen (Sophia Lee and Landry Frost) and 2 sophomores (Ella Scott and CheyAnne Schrick) claim individual titles in girls state high school golf tournaments

By Gary Baines – 5/20/2025

That’s what you might call a youth movement …

This week marked the first time four separate Colorado girls state high school golf championships were held — and all four individual titles were won by freshmen or sophomores. This despite two seniors coming into the tournaments as defending champions.

Leading that youth movement on Tuesday were Colorado Academy freshman Sophia Lee (winner in Class 2A at Pueblo Country Club), Air Academy freshman Landry Frost (4A champion at Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield), Valor Christian sophomore Ella Scott (5A winner at Todd Creek Golf Club in Thornton) and Timnath sophomore CheyAnne Schrick (3A champ at Boomerang Golf Links in Greeley),

And, to add to the theme, Ponderosa freshman Kaylee Meyering was runner-up in Class 4A , Legend sophomore Maddie Makino was second in 5A, and Manitou Springs sophomore Addison Dorsey placed second in 2A.

Lee and Frost became just the fourth and fifth freshmen since 2002 to claim a girls state high school championship in Colorado, joining Holy Family’s Hailey Schalk (2017), Eaglecrest’s Emma Bryant (2018) and Erie’s Hadley Ashton (2022).

— 5A at Todd Creek GC in Thornton: On a tough day for scoring — 75 was the field’s best tally on Tuesday — Scott managed a 4-over-par 76 to win by three over Makino. It was the third straight state 5A individual title for a Valor Christian golfer.

Scott, who posted two top-7 finishes in Colorado junior majors last year, made three birdies on Tuesday to go along with her eagle and two birdies from Monday. She finished at 4 over par overall. Makino slipped back with four bogeys on her final five holes en route to a second-round 79.

Two-time defending individual champion Brenna Higgins of Valor, who will play her college golf at the University of Colorado, rebounded from a first-round 83 with a 75 on Tuesday, giving her a tie for seventh place.

Valor Christian earned its fourth consecutive team championship — and fourth overall. The all-classification record for consecutive girls state golf team titles in Colorado is five, by Mullen in Class 4A from 2001-05. Joining Scott and Higgins on the title team this time around were junior Aja Blankenship and senior Bella Eide.

— 4A at Broadlands GC in Broomfield: Frost, the girls 14-15 chipping champion at the 2024 Drive, Chip & Putt National Finals at Augusta National, birdied the 14th and 15th holes on Tuesday, then prevailed despite a final-hole bogey.

Frost, also a regional champion last week, closed with a 6-over-par 78 which left her at 7 over par for two days.

Meyering made a surge with an eagle on the par-5 13th hole, but suffered bogeys on 16 and 18 en route to a 77 to finish one back of Frost. Windsor senior Macy Kleve was also very much in the hunt for the title until the end, but bogeys on the last two holes left her in third place, two behind Frost, following a closing 78.

Junior Sophia Capua of Vista Peak, like Frost a past chipping-discipline champion at the DCP National Finals, tied Riverdale Ridge junior Brynn Balliet for fourth place.

Riverdale Ridge claimed a girls golf team championship for the first time, ending up 13 strokes ahead of Durango. RR checked in at 68 over par for two rounds, with Balliet, freshman Leah Johnson, junior Karina Panyavong and freshman Rylynn Fuss comprising the winning team.

— 3A at Boomerang GL in Greeley: Schrick, 16, fended off Littleton junior Zoe Bar-Or to claim the 3A individual crown by two strokes. Schrick struggled somewhat down the stretch, going 5 over par for the last eight holes, but had built up a big enough cushion to earn the title. She ended up carding rounds of 74-76 for a 6-over-par total.

Schrick made the round of 16 at last year’s CGA State Junior, which features a mixture of stroke play and match play.

Bar-Or finished with Tuesday’s best round in 3A — a 2-over 74 — and she played her last four holes in 1 under to check in at 8 over par overall. Holy Family junior Peyton Mraz (72-83) ended up in third place at 11 over par.

Holy Family ran away with the team title, winning by whopping 31 strokes over Mullen. It was the Tigers’ first girls golf team championship. They finished at 44 over par for two days. The winning team included Mraz, junior Steffi Heitz, sophomore Acadia Curtis and senior Finley Holmes.

— 2A at Pueblo Country Club: Lee, a member of the Team Colorado junior elite squad, led after both rounds of the inaugural 2A tournament and eventually cruised to a five-stroke victory

Lee finished the season strong, as she posted the best regional state-qualifying score of anyone in Class 2A — a 71 at RainDance National last week. Last year, Lee won a junior major — the Colorado PGA Junior Invitational — by five strokes, and placed second and third in two other junior majors.

Prospect Ridge senior Hope Torres, who won the 3A individual title last year, finished fourth on Monday after rounds of 83-74. Torres is headed to the University of Montana for her college golf.

In the team competition, Colorado Academy prevailed by 18 strokes over Salida, posting a 75-over-par total. It was CA’s seventh state team title in girls golf — second only to Cherry Creek (11) — but first since 2019. Colorado Academy’s team consisted of Lee, senior Avery Lent, sophomore Jordan Slutzky and sophomore Siena Walsh.
