Tie-Breaker

With narrow team victory, Colorado PGA pros take lead over CGA amateurs in all-time series at Western Colorado Cup Matches

By Gary Baines – 10/9/2025

With the Colorado PGA professionals and the CGA amateurs tied at 14 victories apiece in the Western Colorado Cup Matches, there was more on the line this month in their annual competition than just a single-year win.

That being the case, the pros defeated the amateurs 11-9 on Oct. 4 at Battlement Mesa Golf Club in Parachute, giving them the 2025 title and the lead in the all-time series, 15-14. The pros, who claimed the title in each of the first 10 years of the Western Colorado Cup, prevailed for the overall victory for just the fith time in the last 19 years — but the second year in a row.

The pros trailed late in the day on Oct. 4, but claimed 3.5 out of the final 4 singles points up for grabs to earn the victory.

The winning Colorado PGA professional team (from left): Luke Brosterhous, Darren Szot, Tom Taylor, Glen-Micheal Mihavetz, Carrie Catherine Ganim, Russell Aragon, Jeff Carter, Loren Forney and Mitch Murray. Not pictured: Joe Carlson and non-playing team captain Steve Van Dyke.

The competition featured three nine-hole sessions — four-ball, foursomes and singles. Each team included 10 players — five open-age men, two women and three senior men.

The pros won the four-ball and singles sessions, while the two teams tied in foursomes.

Five players won all three of their matches — Jeff Carter, Carrie Catherine Ganim and Loren Forney for the pros, and Michael Smith and Dave Sorel for the amateurs. Also going unbeaten were pro Glen-Micheal Mihavetz (2-0-1) and amateur Doug Choate (1-0-2).

The Western Colorado Cup — supported by the CGA and the Colorado PGA — benefits the Western Colorado Golf Foundation, with proceeds helping provide college scholarships to western Coloradans who participated in golf activities during their high school years.

Frank Wilkinson, a member of the CGA board of directors, serves as chairman of the competition besides being the non-competing captain of the amateur team.
