Strong Showings

Former CU golfer Robyn Choi keeps stacking up top-15 finishes on LPGA Tour; Valor Christian, DU grad Katie Hollern notches by far her best showing on Epson Tour

Success on the top golf tours in the world often comes in stages.

First, the objective is to get and keep status on a big-time tour. Then start making cuts on a consistent basis. Then play well enough to make it onto final-round leaderboards. Then, hopefully, win some titles at the highest level.

Former University of Colorado golfer Robyn Choi is somewhere in the midst of that process. But she’s certainly making inroads.

On Sunday, Choi finished tied for 12th at the LPGA Tour’s Fortinet Founders Cup after sharing third place earlier on the back nine in Menlo Park, Calif.

That marks Choi’s sixth official top-15 finish at an LPGA event in the last 10 months. During that stretch, she’s placed ninth, 11th, 12th twice, 13th and 15th.

That’s nice progress for the 28-year-old, whose first two LPGA starts came at the U.S. Women’s Open in 2017 and ’18 after qualifying in Colorado for that championship as an amateur.

Choi, a native of Australia, shot four straight under-par rounds — 71-68-69-71 — to finish at 9 under par, seven strokes being winner Hyo Joo Kim. The former Buff golfer (2016-18) earned $52,519.

Choi eagled the 10th hole on Sunday in the midst of playing Nos. 6-12 in 4 under par. And shortly thereafter she shared third place. But three bogeys (14-16) set her back before she two-putted for birdie at the par-5 finishing hole.

Choi, who regained her LPGA Tour card by winning the qualifying Q-Series in late 2023, has now made 56 official LPGA Tour starts in her career.

Top-15 Showing for Katie Hollern, Who Grew Up in Sedalia: For an athlete who didn’t play high school or college golf, Katie Hollern is certainly making some nice progress as a professional on tour.

Hollern, who grew up in Salida and graduated from Valor Christian and the University of Denver, on Sunday posted by far the best of her 16 starts on the Epson Tour, which bills itself as the “Road to the LPGA”. Hollern made seven birdies en route to a 4-under-par 68 in the final round of the Orlando Health Championship in Lakeland, Fla. That gave her a 14th-place showing, far surpassing her previous best on the Epson circuit — a 50th place earlier this month in the Atlantic Beach Classic.

And the 29-year-old Hollern was on track for a top-10 finish as she was 7 under par for the day through 12 holes. But a double bogey at No. 13 and a bogey at No. 14 set her back a bit.

As it was, Hollern finished at 5 under par overall, seven strokes behind champion Maddie McCrary. Former University of Colorado golfer Jenny Coleman ended up a stroke behind Hollern, in 15th place.

Part-Time Coloradan Scott Vincent Just Misses Top-10 in LIV Event: Part-time Coloradan Scott Vincent posted his third-best finish ever in LIV Golf as he placed 11th on Sunday in South Africa.

Vincent recorded scores of 66-68-66-65 for a 19-under-par total, which left him seven strokes behind champion Bryson DeChambeau. Vincent earned $380,000.

Vincent’s only better finishes in LIV Golf came in 2023 as he placed fourth in both Singapore and Jeddah. SCORES
