2 freshmen — 2024 Drive, Chip & Putt National Finals chipping champ Landry Frost (4A) and Sophia Lee (2A) — among leaders going into final day of girls state high school tourneys
By Gary Baines – 5/19/2025
Landry Frost is one of just four Coloradans who have won an individual-discipline title at the Drive, Chip & Putt National Finals at Augusta National. Now, the freshman at Air Academy High School would like to add another distinction.
Frost shot a 1-over-par 73 on Monday at Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield, which gave her a two-stroke lead at the midway point of the Class 4A girls state high school tournament. Should she win on Tuesday, Frost would become the fourth (or fifth) freshman since 2002 to claim a girls state high school championship in Colorado, joining Holy Family’s Hailey Schalk (2017), Eaglecrest’s Emma Bryant (2018) and Erie’s Hadley Ashton (2022).
(Another freshman, Sophia Lee of Colorado Academy, leads the 2A state tournament — see below.)
Frost, who prevailed in the girls 14-15 chipping portion of the 2024 DCP National Finals, made three birdies and four bogeys on Monday. Only three other players in the field broke 80 on day 1 of the 36-hole event: Macy Kleve of Windsor (75), Kaylee Meyering of Ponderosa (75) and
Karina Panyavong of Riverdale Ridge (78).
Riverdale Ridge leads the team competition by nine stroke after day 1.
Elsewhere, in Class 5A at Todd Creek Golf Club in Thornton, three players have separated themselves from the field somewhat as sophomores Ella Scott of Valor Christian and Maddie Makino of Legend share the top spot at even-par 72, with Legend junior Adyson Ice one back. Scott made an eagle and two birdies on Monday, and Makino three birdies.
Valor Christian senior Brenna Higgins, attempting to become just the fourth three-time girls state high school individual champion, struggled in round 1, not making a birdie en route to shooting an 11-over-par 83 on Monday. She sits in 21st place.
Valor leads Legend by one stroke heading into Tuesday’s final round.
In Class 3A at Boomerang Golf Links in Greeley, two Holy Family juniors — Peyton Mraz and Steffi Heitz — are among the top three in the individual standings after 18 holes. Mraz shot an even-par 72 — making three birdies and three bogeys — and leads by two over Timnath sophomore Cheyanne Schrick. Heitz sits third at 77. The only other individual to shoot in the 70s on Monday was Littleton junior Zoe Bar-Or, who carded a 78.
Holy Family leads the team competition by 20 shots over Northridge.
At the inaugural Class 2A state tournament at Pueblo Country Club, Sophia Lee of Colorado Academy also could become one of those rare freshmen to claim a state high school title as she leads by one individually going into the final round. Lee, a member of the Team Colorado elite junior squad, made an eagle and a birdie to go along with three bogeys and a double bogey as she opened with a 2-over-par 74. She’s one better than Salida senior Kyndra Johnson, who made a ultra-rare double eagle on the 411-yard, par-5 11th hole on Monday.
In a relatively tight team race, Colorado Academy sits at 256, four ahead of Salida, eight up on Denver Christian and 13 ahead of Kent Denver.
