With victory in Montrose, Englewood’s Henry Starr extends local win streak for boys in Colorado-based AJGA events

By Gary Baines – 8/1/2025

There was a time, not so long ago, that Colorado boys golfers had a difficult time defending their home turf in prestigious AJGA events held in the Centennial State.

For instance, in the first three years the tournament now known as the AJGA’s Wyndham Clark presented by the CGA was won by boys from states other than Colorado.

But times have changed.

With Henry Starr of Englewood on Friday winning the boys division of the AJGA Junior Open at The Bridges Presented by the City of Montrose, Coloradans have claimed the boys titles at the last six straight Colorado-based AJGA events.

Colorado boys swept all three AJGA tournaments held in the Centennial State in 2025 (wins by Starr, Nicholas Brooks of Parker and Miles Kuhl of Boulder) and in 2024 (Austin Hunt of Highlands Ranch, Tyler Long of Evergreen and Kuhl).

An impressive streak indeed.

In Montrose at The Bridges, Starr carded scores of 66-64-72 for an 11-under-par total and won the boys title by five over Mac Buckley of Denver (68-69-70).

Starr, a Cherry Creek High School graduate who will play his college golf at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, finished with an eagle, 15 birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey.

Earlier this month, Starr shared seventh place at the boys PGA High School Golf National Invitational at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.

Ruihan Kendria Wang of Bellevue, Wash. (69-68-68) won the girls title for the second straight year in Montrose, this time by five strokes. Addison Dorsey of Colorado Springs (75-70-69) was the top Colorado finisher, placing third.

Lee carded scores of 76-67-69-77 for a 4-over-par total, ending up 16 strokes behind champion Asterisk Talley of Chowchilla, Calif. This year, Lee has won the Mizuno Colorado Junior PGA Championship and the 2A girls state high school title. SCORES
