2 Team Colorado members — Ella Scott (5A) & Addison Dorsey (2A) — claim girls state high school individual titles, joining Cheyanne Schrick (3A) & Kaylee Meyering (4A) as champs; it’s 2 in a row for Scott, Schrick
By Gary Baines
Team Colorado represents the best of the best among junior golfers in the state. That goes with the territory when you receive considerable support from the USGA as part of the U.S National Development Program.
Once again this week, members of Team Colorado put their talent on display at one of the more high-profile junior golf events held in the state.
With four girls state high school tournaments being held simultaneously on Monday and Tuesday — at three sites in the Denver metro area and one in Montrose — two produced individual champions that are part of Team Colorado, which features eight female golfers overall. Two other TC golfers finished runner-up, including one in a playoff.
Making the grade as champions this week were junior Ella Scott of Valor Christian (Class 5A) and Manitou Springs junior Addison Dorsey (2A). Air Academy sophomore Landry Frost (4A), another Team Colorado member, finished second in a playoff to Ponderosa sophomore Kaylee Meyering at the 4A meet. And Lee was runner-up to fellow Team Colorado golfer Dorsey in the 2A tournament.
The other player — besides Meyering — who’s not part of Team Colorado but won a state title on Tuesday was Timnath junior CheyAnne Schrick, who posted a stellar final round of 7-under-par 65 to win her second straight 3A championship. She improved a whopping 12 strokes from Monday to Tuesday.
Shrick was one of two golfers to claim their second straight individual state championship, joining Scott. That means that 15 players in history have now won two or more Colorado girls golf state titles. That includes three three-time champs — Lynn Ann Moretto of Cherry Creek (state titles in 1995, ’96 and ’97, all in a single classification); Ashley Tait of Mullen (2002, ’04 and ’05 in 4A); and Hailey Schalk of Holy Family (2017 and ’18 in 3A and ’19 in 4A). It should be noted that one of the two-time winners is Jennifer Kupcho (Jefferson Academy), who now has four LPGA Tour victories to her credit.
With the weather better on Tuesday — but still quite a bit colder than usual for the second half of May — here’s how things went down at the four state tournaments:
— Class 5A at Thorncreek Golf Course in Thornton: Valor Christian junior Ella Scott, not only the defending state champion but the winner of the prestigious CGA State Junior last year, added to her list of accomplishments on Tuesday with a repeat title in 5A.
After taking a two-stroke lead into the final round, Scott birdied two of her first three holes on Tuesday en route to shooting a 2-under 70 at Thorncreek. Overall, she posted a 1-under total for 36 holes.
Legend freshman Scout Fitzgerald, daughter of two-time Colorado PGA overall player of the year Caine Fitzgerald, took second place at 3 over after a 72 on Tuesday. Rock Canyon senior Ashley Chang placed third at 4 over after shooting the low round of the tournament, a bogey-free 68 on Tuesday.
With Scott leading the way, Valor Christian matched a state record by winning its fifth consecutive team championship. Since girls golf was first sanctioned for the 1990 season, only one other team has captured five straight team titles — Mullen, in Class 4A from 2001-05.
With a 19-over-par total, Valor ended up 19 strokes ahead of second-place Legend.
Joining Scott on Valor’s 2026 winning team were freshman Emma Nguyen (fourth place), freshman Chloe Johnson (eighth) and senior Aja Blankenship (19th).
— Class 4A at The Bridges Golf & Country Club in Montrose: Ponderosa sophomore Kaylee Meyering won a sudden-death playoff with a bogey, taking advantage after defending champion Landry Frost, a sophomore at Air Academy, struggled on the final three holes of regulation and in the playoff on Tuesday.
Frost apparently was in control after Meyering, the 2025 runner-up to Frost, made a triple-bogey 8 on the 15th hole, giving the Air Academy golfer a five-stroke advantage.
But Frost went triple bogey, double bogey, bogey on her final three holes of regulation, while Meyering carded scores of bogey, par, par on those holes to force a playoff. Then on the extra hole, Meyering’s bogey was good enough for the victory as Frost recorded a triple bogey after hitting into a penalty area.
After a final-round 78, Meyering finished at 11 over par to reverse last year’s finish by the top two players. Frost closed with a 79.
Riverdale Ridge senior Brynn Balliet claimed third place, four behind Meyering and Frost.
Ponderosa (72 over par) bested Riverdale Ridge (+94) and Air Academy (+95) for the 4A team title — the school’s first in girls golf. Ponderosa’s winning team consisted of Meyering, senior sister Olivia Meyering (fourth place), freshman Rachel Yanofsky (19th) and sophomore Madeline Deroeck (29th).
— Class 3A at Foothills Golf Course in South Denver: Timnath junior CheyAnne Schrick, who trailed freshman teammate Peyton Landon by two entering the final day, put on a show at Foothills to win the individual title by nine strokes, going back-to-back in 3A.
Taking advantage of a relatively short course — Foothills was playing 5,307 yards —Schrick birdied five of her first six holes on Tuesday (Nos. 2-6) and was 7 under par for the day through 11 holes. From there, she made her lone bogey of the day on No. 13 and birdied 16 to record one of the lowest scores in Colorado girls golf state tournament history — a 65. It was certainly a far cry from Monday, when she made just one birdie and shot 77 in very challenging weather conditions. Overall, she ended up at 2 under par for 36 holes.
Schrick has now finished fourth, first and first in her three state high school tournaments.
Landon closed with a 76 to finish solo second at 7 over. Besides going 1-2 in the individual standings, Timnath also had a player share third place as freshman Isla Carlucci tied for that spot at 8 over with Littleton senior Zoe Bar-Or.
Not surprisingly, Timnath ran away with the 3A team championship, prevailing by 28 shots over runner-up Holy Family. Another freshman, Siena Schrick, rounded out Timnath’s state squad as she finished 21st. It was THS’ first girls state golf title.
— Class 2A at Lone Tree Golf Club: Manitou Springs junior Addison Dorsey fended off defending champion — and fellow Team Colorado member — Sophia Lee, a sophomore at Colorado Academy, to claim the 2A individual title.
Dorsey eagled the par-5 fifth hole en route to an even-par 72 on Tuesday, leaving her at 5 over par overall.
Lee made a run at winning her second straight championship, rebounding from a first-round 80 by carding birdies on four of her first six holes on Tuesday and sitting 4 under for the day through 13 holes. But back-to-back double bogeys on the 281-yard 14th and 15th holes largely derailed her comeback. Lee finished with a second-round 71, leaving her two back of Dorsey.
First-round leader Quinn Roman, a sophomore from St. Mary’s Academy, finished third at 11 over par overall.
In a very tight team race, Resurrection Christian rallied on Tuesday to edge first-round leader Denver Christian by a single stroke for the 2A title — RCHS’ first state championship in girls golf. The Cougars’ winning team consisted of senior Karina Garcia (seventh place), freshman Addison Moreno (eighth), freshman Brittyn Goings (12th) and senior Avery Stockslager (16th).
